In the IB, students are encouraged to help in their community. As an educator, I try to lead by example.

Since coming from an all-consuming fast-paced 24/7 corporate job in Soho, London, one of things I have most valued since moving to York in order to retrain as a teacher, has been the ability to dedicate a portion of my time to help in the community.

Carecent Homeless Charity

From 2022-2023, while studying at university, I volunteered at York’s Carecent charity centre which provides food and daytime shelter for the homeless and those in need. For 3 months from July-Sept 2022, I was temporarily engaged as Interim Manager of the Project while the charity carried out their recruitment process for a new Manager. I learnt a huge amount about safeguarding and support working as part of this compassionate team.

York St John Language Community School

In 2024, as part of my CELTA course at York St John University, I was able to volunteer as a TESOL teacher of English language to Speakers of Other Languages, including working with refugees from Palestine, Yemen, Ukraine, Syria and elsewhere. I have found the experience hugely rewarding and hope to continue this voluntary teaching for as long as possible.

Osbaldwick Primary Academy

In 2023, I volunteered for 6 days over 6 weeks in a primary academy school with Years 5 & 6 in around the SATS examinations, among a wonderful staff and student body. As a teacher training for Secondary, it was hugely informative to spend time with children in the environment they experience shortly before progressing to senior school.

Community Theatre

In York, as well teaching drama and directing Youth Theatre groups professionally, mounting many large scale productions, I also volunteered taking part in community theatre projects, during my first year of university (for footage see left).

Other Endeavours

I have also greatly enjoyed helping York’s Belfrey Church make and distribute Christmas present and food hampers for those vulnerable in the local community each December, distributed food waste from local providers to families in need weekly, and run the York Marathon in aid of Save The Children in 2024. A big big thank you to all my students across Yorkshire who I teach who helped sponsor me with their pocket money, contributing to this important charity, who help families affected by war.
